Earlier this week my office announced that they are moving our operations from NJ/NYC to Pittsburgh and that we will longer have a job in the area. The ramification of losing a job never hit me till I saw an older lady crying her heart out over her displacement. In a tearful choked up manner she says, "I have a daughter to take care of and a house to pay for, with out this job I can lose my house." This woman (who looks like she could well be in her 40's) made me realize that the ability to find a new job will not come as easy to her as compared to a 27 year old whiz kid. The caveat to this 27 year old whiz kid's ability to find another is that while easier for him to find another job else where, his financial needs do not necessitate an immediate relocation. There are other people out there in similar shoes to the 40 something year old woman who have more on the line in terms of employment and steady income. So, while the 27 year old whiz kid just needs a steady income to pay for his bar tab at his next social function someone out there is defaulting on a mortgage. The 27 year old whiz kid sees this unemployment as a mild disruption, while the 40 something year old woman sees this as a life changing event. My best wishes go to the 40 something year old woman who I'm sad to say will probably lose out a couple job opportunities to the 27 year old whiz kid. I hope the next frivolous purchase the 27 year old whiz kid makes he realizes that there exists a mother who can't afford this months mortgage payment.
